Every time a company installs <strong>home charging points for employees<\/strong>, the same question arises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cShould we already plan for Vehicle-to-Grid?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The short answer? <strong>Yes, but not yet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s explore why \u2014 from <strong>technical readiness<\/strong> to <strong>regulatory barriers<\/strong> and <strong>business implications<\/strong> \u2014 and how companies can start preparing <strong>today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vehicle-to-Grid<\/strong> refers to the ability of electric vehicles to <strong>not only draw energy from the grid<\/strong> to charge their batteries but also to <strong>send it back<\/strong> when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>V2G<\/strong>, EVs become <strong>mobile batteries<\/strong> \u2014 providing flexibility to the energy system by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>absorbing electricity when it\u2019s abundant (e.g. sunny, windy hours),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and releasing it when demand is high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates a <strong>win-win<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>for the <strong>grid<\/strong>: balancing supply and demand,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for <strong>users<\/strong>: potential financial gains,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and for <strong>companies<\/strong>: smarter energy use and decarbonization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where Does Belgium Stand Today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbrella.eu\/crossroads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mbrella Crossroads<\/a><\/strong>, a key event for sustainable mobility actors, we had the pleasure to exchange with <strong>Philippe Vangeel (EV Belgium)<\/strong> and <strong>Nick Boels (Mbrella)<\/strong> on this very topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what emerged from the discussion \u2014 and what\u2019s confirmed by <strong>Elia\u2019s latest Adequacy and Flexibility Study (2026\u20132036)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1.&nbsp;Technically, V2G is Ready<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>V2G-compatible chargers already exist<\/strong> and are commercially available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vehicles<\/strong> such as the Nissan Leaf or Kia EV6 are already <strong>bidirectional-capable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elia estimates an <strong>80% round-trip efficiency<\/strong>, making it a viable flexibility source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.&nbsp;But Belgian Regulation Isn\u2019t<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most chargers <strong>haven\u2019t yet passed RGIE conformity tests<\/strong> (mandatory for installation).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Without certification, <strong>deployment remains blocked<\/strong> \u2014 even if hardware is ready.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.&nbsp;The Operating Model Is Still Being Defined<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Should EVs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>react to <strong>price signals<\/strong> (market-based flexibility), or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>respond to <strong>building-level energy flows<\/strong> (local optimization)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both approaches have merits. But as Elia warns, <strong>price-based mass reactions<\/strong> could create <strong>physical \u201con\/off\u201d effects<\/strong> on the grid if thousands of vehicles switch simultaneously \u2014 a challenge for <strong>system stability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4.&nbsp;The HR &amp; Fiscal Framework Is Missing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Belgium\u2019s <strong>tax and HR rules<\/strong> aren\u2019t designed for bidirectional flows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using <strong>employer-paid electricity<\/strong> at home to discharge back could be considered a <strong>benefit in kind<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This raises questions about <strong>car policies<\/strong>, <strong>reimbursement<\/strong>, and <strong>advantage valuation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does Elia\u2019s Study Tell Us?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/eliagroup\/docs\/adequacy_and_flexibility_study_for_belgium_2026-2?fr=sZGQ5Njg2NjM5NTg\">Elia<\/a><\/strong>, V2G and other forms of <strong>end-user flexibility<\/strong> could deliver:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>up to <strong>\u20ac350\u2013500 million per year<\/strong> in <strong>system-wide savings<\/strong> by 2036,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce Belgium\u2019s <strong>adequacy gap<\/strong> by up to <strong>800 MW<\/strong> in high-flexibility scenarios,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and involve <strong>hundreds of thousands of vehicles<\/strong> contributing to <strong>balancing markets<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, to unlock this potential, <strong>three conditions<\/strong> are crucial:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regulatory clarity<\/strong> (market access, RGIE conformity, fiscal framework),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technical enablers<\/strong> (smart meters, submetering, compliant chargers),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engagement of fleet operators and employers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Should Companies Do Today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if <strong>full V2G isn\u2019t operational yet<\/strong>, companies can already:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plan infrastructure accordingly<\/strong>: install <strong>V2G-ready chargers<\/strong> (hardware upgradable).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design flexible car policies<\/strong>: integrate clauses anticipating <strong>bidirectional charging<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collect data now<\/strong>: via <strong>smart charging (V1)<\/strong> to prepare for <strong>future optimization<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Work with advisors<\/strong> (like <strong>Next Mobility<\/strong>) to assess <strong>HR, fiscal and operational impacts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why It Matters for Corporate Mobility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Belgium, <strong>83% of new EVs<\/strong> are <strong>company cars<\/strong> (Elia, 2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means <strong>employers<\/strong> are the <strong>key enablers<\/strong> of V2G adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their choices \u2014 from <strong>charging strategy<\/strong> to <strong>reimbursement models<\/strong> \u2014 will determine whether V2G becomes a <strong>real asset<\/strong> or a <strong>missed opportunity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>V2G is more than a technology \u2014 it\u2019s a <strong>paradigm shift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It blurs the lines between <strong>mobility<\/strong>, <strong>energy<\/strong>, and <strong>HR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At <strong>Next Mobility<\/strong>, we\u2019re closely following these developments and <strong>actively working<\/strong> on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>how to <strong>integrate V2G<\/strong> into <strong>car policies<\/strong> and <strong>operational processes<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how to anticipate <strong>fiscal and HR implications<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and how to <strong>align energy and mobility strategies<\/strong> for future readiness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because when V2G becomes available, <strong>being prepared will make all the difference<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>V2G is on everyone\u2019s lips \u2014 from fleet managers to facility operators and HR leaders.
